Darth Vader’s image was created by Concept artist Ralph McQuarrie. Originally Darth Vader was going to fly through space, which would require a helmet and breathing apparatus. This idea was later shelved, but the mask was kept. Sound designer Ben Burtt created the sound of the character’s breathing by recording his own breathing into scuba gear. The costume was based on that of a Japanese Samurai warrior.

Darth Vader was a fearsome cyborg and Sith Lord in the original Star Wars trilogy, serving as Emperor Palpatine’s right hand. The Emperor was the leader and supreme commander of the Galactic Empire, which hunted down the Rebel Alliance. Later Darth Vader is depicted as Anakin Skywalker, a slave boy who later becomes a heroic Jedi Knight. He then falls to the “Dark Side” of the Force after the Emperor forces him to betray the Jedi and destroy the Galactic Republic. In The Return of the Jedi, Vader redeems himself by killing Emperor Palpatine and saving his son Luke, In the process Darth Vader is killed.
